We asked Chat GPT, an artificial intelligence “AI” chatbot a simple question, “Write a blog post about using AI for marketing.” In less than 15 seconds, our blog was complete. However… Was it a well-written blog?

As a marketing agency that serves clients from a multitude of industries, understanding the future of AI and the positive and negative impacts of using it is valuable. So far, our team has tested using AI to generate marketing copy and social ideas for a few clients. Below are 3 tips we learned for using AI as a copywriting tool. We’ve also included the full AI-written blog for your viewing pleasure.

1. WHEN USING A CHATBOT, PROVIDE AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE

AI chatbots are still young and need a lot of details on a topic to understand the task you want completed. Because they aren’t human, they also lack context. When I asked the question that prompted our blog, I was really looking for it to talk about .. well.. Itself and other up-and-coming AI content creation tools. However, it wrote about other uses of AI in marketing, including AI in data and analytics, social scheduling and email newsletter automation, customer service chatbots, and predictive business analytics. While these are all ways that AI is being used in our day-to-day with marketing, the context of what I actually hoped for was missing.

2. USE AI AS A CREATIVE STARTING POINT, DON’T COPY/PASTE

Colleges are starting to have systems that can detect whether a paper was written with AI. Search engines can tell too. In a February 2023, article from Social Media Today, Google Search’s guidance about AI-generated content was referenced. “Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines. This means that it is not used to generate content primarily to manipulate search rankings, which is against our spam policies.”

Because AI-generated text often comes from a template and other information it’s been fed, it may not rank as high when published to your website. For these reasons, we see AI as a tool, not as a copywriter. It has been helpful for checking on any topic we may have missed when writing marketing content. It’s fun to use for creative purposes as well, including coming up with poems, jokes, or songs related to a brand.

3. DOUBLE CHECK FOR GRAMMAR

We’ve taken the liberty of roughly marking all the grammatical errors from our AI-generated blog below. If you take a quick glance, you can understand why it’s valuable to have a set of human eyes on your writing before hitting ‘publish.’ There’s quite a few run-on sentences and in the conclusion section, the last sentence is incomplete. The writing style is also repetitive and the same words are used right after another (highlighted in green). Sentences that use the same words can draw attention away from the focus of your article and distract readers. It’s also a waste of space! We recommend publishing concisely written blogs that include searchable, SEO-focused words.
